The Gate Drill
The gate drill is a very simple one to set up and all you need is 2 tees and a couple of golf balls. Start the gate drill by simply choosing a putt of any length and break. Place your golf balls down where you want to strike the putt from and assess your slope and speed as you would with a normal putt. Once you have decided that simply take your two tees and make a gate half way between the ball and the hole. The idea behind the gate is you want the ball to roll through the gate and then roll into the hole providing the speed is correct. The fantastic thing about this drill is it will instantly tell you what aspect was good or what aspect you need to get better:
- Mechanics – If the ball misses the gate to the right or the left, you can generally identify this as a stroke mechanics issue, you did not start the ball on the necessary line to get through the gate.
- Speed -If your ball makes it through the gate that you set, but has missed on the high side of the hole and finished significantly passed the hole (ie more than 1.5ft approximately) you will need to reduce the pace of the putt
Break – If the ball makes it through the gate, but finishes past the hole on either side you may need to adjust where you have placed the gate.
